A few days camping in Acadia National Park with our good freinds Leslie & Greg. We were already visiting them in Portland, ME; from there, a swing up to ANP is an easy three-hour trek. The campground is great, a short walk from Park Loop Road and cliffs overlooking Otter Cove.
Highlights of the trip included a hike on the Gorham Mountain Trail. The trail is listed as a moderate hike because it has some elevation gain; the mountain is under 600 feet, but it has stunning views of the ocean and the Thunder Hole area of the park. It was easy enough that we could let our kids, seven and four years old, do the leading. We parked in a lot just beyond Thunder Hole. Rising through a forested area, you'll come across an ancient cave that was once at shore level. As you approach the summit, the area is mostly exposed granite—easily walkable. From here, we followed the Bowl Trail to The Bowl, a lovely mountain tarn inaccessible by car. After hiking back down, we took a park shuttle back to our starting point.
